Experienced severe diarrhea after eating Japanese ramen overseas
Share
When I was frequently travelling to Indonesia for work, I was struck by severe diarrhea for some reason, and it took a week to recover even after returning home. This happened three times in a row.
Indonesia is known for its poor hygiene, and I was aware that it was easy to get diarrhea if you were not used to the local food, so I was careful. I wondered what the cause was, and although I was careful every time I travelled, I was finally able to identify the cause.
Surprisingly, the cause was the ramen I ate at a Japanese ramen shop in Jakarta. It was recommended by a Japanese expat, who said it was delicious and hygienic, so I ate it without hesitation. However, the shop was using imported fresh noodles that contained preservative. The doctor who diagnosed me suggested that the preservative might not have agreed with my body type.
After I stopped eating ramen in Jakarta, I no longer had diarrhoea symptoms after that and I did not take the anti-diarrhoea medicine my family doctor prescribed.
I do like ramen, but even in Japan, I often felt unwell after eating it. Later, I found out that the gluten in the noodles was the cause. The combination of gluten and preservatives seems to have triggered severe diarrhea. Additives, including preservatives, are something to be cautious about.
